Fifty people were killed and a hundred more were injured after a commuter train plowed into a barrier at a Buenos Aires station, Argentina (Wednesday,Feb.22,2012). This is considered as among the worst in Argentina’s history reported by Telam (source: CNN). Due to this incident, Argentina’s president declared a two-day mourning period. President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner declared a statement about the mourning period saying “The government and people of Argentina give their solidarity and weigh the pain felt by the families of the victims,”.
The train crash injured 676 people. Local hospitals were flooded by family members and crowd for news of missing loved ones. According to the transportation minister, the train was driven by 28-year-old driver and has a good record. Transportation Secretary Juan Pablo Schiavi said authorities believed there were problems with the train’s brakes that caused it to strike into a barrier at the station.
